Are premium synthetic motor oils worth the extra expense for your vehicle? The consensus—the general agreement among automotive experts—is that premium synthetic oils are superior lubricants. In this article, the synthetic oils discussed are specifically identified as premium synthetic oils because, like with every class of consumer product, there are varying levels of quality. Simply labeling an engine oil as “synthetic” is not a reliable indicator of quality, as the overall formulation of the oil is the most important factor in the quality and efficacy of the lubricant. A well-formulated conventional engine oil can outperform a poorly formulated “synthetic” engine oil. With that said, beginning the formulation of a motor oil with high quality synthetic base stocks does allow for a superior product compared to an equal quality level conventional motor oil.

Motor oils, and most lubricants in general, are composed of base oils and additives. Discussion of “synthetic” or “conventional” relates only to the base oils in the lubricant. Conventional base oils are made from crude oil/petroleum and occasionally re-refine used oil. Synthetic base oils are made from petroleum, hydrocarbon gases, and alcohols. Ultimately, all lubricant base oils are hydrocarbon molecules; the processes by which the synthetic base oils are made is what sets them apart from conventional base oils.

The advantages of synthetic base oils are thanks to the extreme cleanliness and consistency of the molecular structure achieved in the processing. Conventional base oils are typically only lightly refined, with not all of the inherent impurities (waxes, sulfur, etc.) removed from the petroleum. Instead of being simply refined, the crude for synthetic oil is engineered to produce a uniform molecular structure that offers superior lubrication. Finally, proprietary additives are introduced to make full synthetic oil even better.

Premium full synthetic motor oil costs more because synthetic oil costs more to make. The high quality synthetic base oils and state-of-the-art additives used are typically much more expensive than the materials used in standard lubricants. However, with lubricants you do get what you pay for, in that a well-formulated synthetic oil that uses high-quality, synthetic base oils and high-quality additives, provides additional benefits for the higher purchase price.

Keep these facts in mind when you take your car or truck in for its next scheduled oil change.

Better High-Temperature Performance. Premium synthetic engine oils are less volatile, so they maintain viscosity better than conventional oils and lower quality synthetic oils.

Better Low-Temperature Performance. The high-quality synthetic base oils used in premium synthetic lubricants provide better natural cold flow, so the oil flows and lubricates better before reaching full operating temperature.

Cleaner Operation. Because of the consistent molecular structure and purity of the base oil, premium synthetic engine oils are more stable, better resist oxidation (aging), and produce fewer deposits. In fact, some premium synthetic oils like Royal Purple actually remove existing engine deposits.

Better Mileage. Because of the superior cold flow, greater lubricity, and cleaner operation of the engine, premium synthetic engine oils can also contribute to greater fuel economy.

Fewer Oil Changes. Do you change your oil every 3,000 miles? Every 6,000 miles? Those are the most common intervals for U.S. cars and trucks. With Royal Purple full synthetic motor oil, feel free to change your oil every 12,000 miles, or 12 months (whichever comes first). That’s 16–50 fewer oil changes over the life of a car or truck that reaches 200,000 miles.

Royal Purple is one of a few commonly available premium synthetic engine oils, so it provides the inherent advantages listed above, but Royal Purple synthetic oils go beyond that, as well. Because of the advanced, proprietary Synerlec® additive technology, Royal Purple synthetic oils containing Synerlec outperform any other lubricant, including other premium synthetic oils.

Synerlec additive technology increases the oil film strength to 3 – 4 times that of any oil of comparable viscosity. This reduces metal-to-metal contact, thereby greatly reducing short- and long-term wear, as well as damage that occurs at cold start. This incredible film strength along with increased oxidation resistance provides a higher level of protection even when traffic and conditions are at their most demanding.

So, there it is. Premium synthetic motor oil is better for your engine, better for your mileage, and better for your investment. And Royal Purple premium synthetic oils further increase those benefits with proprietary additive technology. To keep your engine running smoothly for the long-term and to enjoy the convenience and savings of less-frequent oil changes, explore our site and find the Royal Purple motor oil right for your car, truck, motorcycle, boat, snowmobile or outdoor power equipment today.

Myth 1: Since full synthetic oils are high performance products, they’re not compatible with my old car or truck.

The truth: Full synthetic motor oils, which deliver increased lubricity and reduce the running temperature of automotive engines, are ideal for your brand-new sports car and your 20-year-old truck.

Myth 2: Once synthetic oil, always synthetic oil.

The truth: Certain professionals and hobbyists may recommend the exclusive use of synthetic engine oils. But going back to conventional oil—or alternating between the two—will not harm your engine in any way.

Myth 3: Synthetic engine oil will cause my vehicle to leak or consume more oil.

The truth: Full synthetics do not damage seals or cause increased oil consumption. However, they may remove earlier oil deposits, which can reveal pre-existing conditions. “New” leaks are most commonly a sign of seals and gaskets that were already in poor condition. In such a case, even if an oil spot was never seen on the ground, dirty oil residue will be observed on the exterior of the engine, indicating a pre-existing leak. The two most common root causes of a perceived increase in oil consumption are: 1. oil consumption that has always been there, but that is now apparent because of the longer oil drain interval (not indicative of a problem); and 2. The removal of piston ring deposits that cause and actual, but temporary, increase in combustion blow-by and oil consumption.

Your car, truck or SUV as well as your outdoor power equipment will only function as well as the oil you put in it. At Royal Purple, we scientifically engineer high performance synthetic oils that outwork the competition in the laboratory, on the road and in the yard.

In addition to freeing up more power and providing greater longevity to 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines, our products help drivers and do-it-yourselfers reduce their emissions and use less gas. Race car drivers and certified mechanics have trusted and relied on our synthetic lubricants for years. Why Royal Purple? Because we make the best lubricants possible, with the best industry-available raw materials and our proprietary additive technology. We developed Synerlec®, our signature additive technology, to provide our customers with industry-best film strength to eliminate excess wear and improve combustion.

Over time, regular motor oil succumbs to oxidation, which ages the oil and introduces acidity to the lubricant. The motor oil is then less able to lubricate and protect the engine from wear and corrosion. Add to this the constant influx of particulates and contaminants and the resulting mixture decreases engine performance and creates the need for expensive repairs later in the life of the car or truck.

Dirty motor oil is not unlike cholesterol. It leaves behind sludge and buildup that makes your engine run harder. For years, Royal Purple has been committed to helping motorists rid their cars and trucks of engine sludge. First of all, a high degree of natural solvency in our synthetic lubricants helps to remove deposited sludge, ensuring that your vehicle’s engine is cleaner and happier.

Royal Purple also starts cleaner than conventional motor oil. The engineered synthetic base oils used in Royal Purple premium synthetic oils don’t exhibit the kind of impurities that naturally occur in less processed base oils that are simply refined from crude. Finally, our full synthetic motor oils don’t break down under extreme heat and pressure like lesser-quality lubricants, making them less likely to contribute any new sludge or deposits.

Full synthetic Royal Purple works fine with ordinary oil filters, but for super-premium filtration that removes particles at 99% efficiency down to 25 microns, use Royal Purple engine oil in concert with Royal Purple Extended Life Oil Filters.

Engines generate a lot of heat. This is especially true during long and high-impact drives (such as stop-and-go rush hour traffic), which can produce extremely high temperatures. With regular motor oil, these conditions can initiate oxidation, which breaks down the molecular structure of conventional oil and causes significant problems for your engine.

To help keep engines safe from overheating, Royal Purple has manufactured premium synthetic motor oil backed by breakthrough proprietary Synerlec® additive technology. Our synthetic engine oil is scientifically designed to combat oxidation, reduce running temperatures and offer extended protection under the most extreme circumstances. The Ultimate High-Temperature Test

What do we mean by “extreme circumstances”? Royal Purple supplied a synthetic lubricant for the China Star Bullet Train, which was experiencing overheating at speeds beyond 100 mph. Our product, made with the same Synerlec additive technology found in our motor oil, beat out more than two dozen competitors and solved their overheating bearing issue. The China Star then set a world land speed record for rail transportation by reaching 200 mph. Imagine what Royal Purple can do for your vehicle.

Royal Purple synthetic motor oil products have superior low-temperature fluidity and a lower coefficient of friction that makes it easier for users to start-up your vehicles in cold weather.

Royal Purple also manufactures Max-Tane™, a state-of-the-art fuel additive designed specifically for use in light, medium and heavy-duty diesel vehicles, which are particularly susceptible to low temperatures. Compatible with all kinds of diesel emissions systems and types of diesel fuel, Max-Tane makes diesel fuels resist crystallization and gelling in cold weather, while improving fuel efficiency up to 10%.

For snowmobile enthusiasts, we designed Snow 2-C, a synthetic 2-stroke engine oil that delivers superior cold temperature pumpability while ensuring engine cleanliness and maximum horsepower.
